The project “Mineral Resources for Development II – BGR Module Tajikistan” (PN 2015.2137.6) is one module in the regional technical cooperation program „Mineral Resources for Development in Central Asia“ which is being implemented in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan since 2012, by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations (OA), and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

In Tajikistan, BGR supports the Main Department of Geology (MDG) through measures for the assessment of the countries´ own raw material potential. Trainings are being offered in areas such as geological field work, software usage and fast-track estimation of mineral occurrences. The project is closely linked to the needs of the partner authority and also pursues the objective of enhancing the visibility of Tajikistan in the international mining sector.

The Sub-Department of mining and sustainability of BGR conducts trainings in the field of economic calculation of mineral deposits. The topic, titled "Fast-track evaluation of Ore Occurrences and Deposits", was focused in a first course on the provision of expertise and methods in the following areas:

  • Mineral ressources and reserves
  • Introduction to feasibility studies
  • Mineral grade and tonnage
  • Economic parametes and evaluation of mineral occurrences

In a second course the knowledge acquired was consolidated with calculations and evaluations based on practical exercises with data on the Republic of Tajikistan’s mineral occurrences.
These training programs updated the knowledge about the evaluation of mineral occurrences, which was up until recently based on a Soviet system, with state of the art methods.
Furthermore, employees of MDG are being prepared for scientific and geology related presentations at international congresses, such as the "International Geological Congress".
In addition, practically orientated field-trainings are part of the project, where methods for mineral resource exploration and general geology are taught.
